Bike Rack for 2 Adult and 1 Balance Bike on a 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

Good afternoon. I am considering the RockyMounts WestSlope 3 Bike Rack for 2006 Toyota 4Runner. We have 2 adult bikes and have a toddler that will start riding a balance bike in 2021. We want a choice that will work well for now and as he grows. Any fit concerns with this vehicle. I know the smallest kids bikes wont necessarily fit on the rack, but hadnt seen much clearly on when some of the kids bikes would start to fit.

I spoke with a contact at RockyMounts. Generally, wheel-mount racks like the WestSlope 3, part # RKY10223, won't be able to secure kids' bikes until they have 20" wheels. Smaller wheels will prevent the arms from reaching and securing the bike.

For now, to carry 2 adult bikes and 1 kid's bike, the only two options are to store the kid's bike in the back of the car, or to use a hanging style rack like the Thule Apex XT, part # TH9025XT. I've linked to a video review of this rack for your consideration.

A hanging style like the Apex XT will hold the bikes up by their top crossbar. To get that for a kid's bike or a women's bike, you can use an adapter like the Kuat Ubar, part # UB01. I've linked to a video review of this adapter as well.
