You will need at least a drill and wrenches to install the Universal Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation Kit with Rails, part # RP30035, on your 2006 GMC 1500. It will take you about 4-5 hours without a hoist. You will not need to weld, but you will be doing a lot of drilling. This is a universal kit and, while inexpensive, is much harder to install.
We do offer a Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Custom Installation Kit with Brackets and Rails for Chevy / GMC trucks, part # RP50064-58, that will cut down your installation time by half. Also, with the custom installation kit you will only need to drill holes in the truck bed, and not into the frame of your truck.
