What you are experiencing is a common problem. There are two accepted ways of wiring a 6-Way connector, one uses the center pin as the brake output circuit, the other uses that pin as the 12 volt power lead. If the adapter and the trailer connector are wired differently, you will get 12 volts sent directly to the brakes immediately upon connecting the trailer. You can swap the wires on the adapter, or if they are not accessible, we offer a universal 6 to 7-Way adapter, part number # 47549 which can easily be wired either way.
