Trailer Hub Compatibility with 17 Inch Wheels
Question:
Hi, I bought some hubs that slip on spindles and didn’t realize they were for a 12” max tire, but the tires I have are 17”. I only use the trailer like 2-3 times a year. Will I have an issue with the hub going out because of a larger tire?

Yes. If your hubs are only designed for 12 inch wheels and you are using 17 inch wheels then the large diameter will likely have an issue. However, It sounds like there may be confusion on fit, so let me give you an overview to assist. There are some idler hubs that restrict the size of the wheel compatible because the mounting flange is smaller, but the hub/drum or rotor assemblies often are limited by size in the other regard because the tire has to be a large enough diameter to fit over the hub or rotor. The bolt pattern is normally what may cause a tire to not fit with a hub.
In your case, it sounds like the information is being misinterpreted. If you want to double check the compatibility, I recommend giving me the bolt pattern. Most 17 inch wheels will have 8 lugs and wouldn't even be compatible with a 12 inch wheel based on bolt pattern alone. I've linked the pages to assist and have also attached a help article.
