Does Dexter Axle Brake Actuator Draw Tow Vehicle Battery Power While Parked?

Question:

I followed your manual diagram to install the Dexter axle brake actuator but I heard a click from the inside of Dexter axle actuator. I am getting a 12 volts reading between the Bat. positive side and the black wire.. This will drain the battery if its is sitting for long in the parking lot. Thank you

Expert Reply:

The Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes - 1,000 psi # K71-650 should have a draw on the truck battery. The draw is dependent on the truck itself as many vehicles will allow the draw for a limited time before shutting down. There shouldn't be an output from the brake actuator, so you shouldn't have an issue with long term parking.

If you are concerned about losing your battery power in the vehicle, then you can unplug the trailer or if you want to add something to your truck, you can use the Battery Isolation Solenoid # PK5231201 which will stop the draw from your vehicle start battery when the accessory voltage is turned off. This protects from unwanted draw to your vehicle start battery will be protected and you won't be stranded.
