Properly Torquing Handle Nut on Base Plate When Handle Breaks Off
Question:
I installed the Roadmaster baseplate # 1444-3, but seemed to have run into a problem and was hoping you could help. On the final stage i was torquing the bolts and ran into an issue. On three of the four 1/2 x1 3/4 bolts part 350096-00 the 6inch rod on the 1/2 tab welded nut part C-002870 broke before reaching the spec. Unfortunately, as I kept trying to tighten it, those just nuts just spun, so I am not able to properly torque those to spec. What can I do? Thank you.

Sorry to hear you're having difficulty installing the # RM-521448-5 base plate, this is an unheard of occurrence. Roadmaster recommends using an impact wrench, which will spin the bolt fast enough that it will tighten to where you can properly torque it.

While we started with an impact wrench, that didn't work. So equipped with the proper beverages and set of tools a few of us gathered around. Because the front skid plate was locked in place and couldn't be removed, we thought to access the nut from the top. We removed the trim then we used a 1" open ended wrench and wedged it against the nut. We then used ratchet to tighten the bolt. After it was secured we were able to torque it to the proper specs. Thank you for all your help - that got us off the ground.
