Setting Up Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution

Question:

I recently installed a RP6651 that I purchased from etrailer. I dont believe I am getting any weight distributing function from it and very little sway control and my truck squats in the back end. I have tried to adjust it but am still not receiving the benefits that I should with a hitch of this cost. I have a 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab with the 64inch bed. My Rockwood Travel Trailer is 7000 lbs with a 1200 lb tongue weight. The trailer frame is 6inch x 2inch with a top coupler. To get a level trailer, I have to put the ball mount in the top shank hole with the ball level adjusted all the way forward. The uncoupled ball sits 7 1/8inch above the trailer coupler. Any lower and the trailer doesnt ride level. The front wheel spacing is 6 1/8inch empty. Hitched but with the bars unattached is 7. With the bars connected, the spacing is 6 7/8inch which means that the weight is not being moved at all. My A frame brackets are in the second hole down from the top. I cant raise it up to the top hole because the ball mount cant be adjusted forward at all so it wont bind. Im wondering if this hitch will work for this truck or if I can exchange for one better suited to my needs. Thank you very much!! Gary

Be sure that the top of the ball is ½” to 1” higher than the top of the coupler before hooking up (trailer/truck level). If I understand correctly, 7 1/8” is the height now – that will not work. The shank can be used in the rise and/or drop positions as needed, so if you have the ball in the drop position and it's already at its maximum height, you can remove the weight distributing head, flip the shank over into the rise position and install the head in the lowest set of holes.

It is ok for the tow vehicle to drop in the back, there’s weight there. The key is that the front of the truck comes back down to where it has before the trailer was loaded on to the truck.
