Parts Needed to Install Brake Controller on 2001 Toyota Tundra with Factory Hitch and 4-Pole Flat

Question:

Hello! I am wanting to install a break control box into a 2001 Tundra. It came with a 4 pin. and a trailer hook-up. Question - how do I know if I can just add a 7 pin adapter and plug into the 4 pin and plug in the break box underneath the dash or if I have to completely wire power back to the back? Thanks so much!

To install a brake controller on your 2001 Toyota Tundra, you'll need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat, part # ETBC7.

Your Tundra isn't pre-wired for a 7-way, nor does it have a brake controller port under the dash, so you'll need to run the necessary wires back to the 7-way adapter (included with ETBC7) and hardwire the brake controller under the dash.

Depending on your brake controller, you may also need a pigtail adapter to make the connections under the dash. Some of the most popular brake controllers include Curt, which would use pigtail # C51515, and Tekonsha, which would use pigtail # 20127, unless yours already came with one, like the Tekonsha P2 # 90885, for example.

If your brake controller is a different brand, let me know so I can give you the correct part number for the corresponding pigtail adapter.

I've included a link to a step by step installation video on a similar year Toyota Tundra for you below.
