Roof Cargo Box for 2019 Ford Expedition and 2020 Ford Escape

Question:

Looking for best recommended rooftop box to hopefully fit both a 2019 Ford Expedition and a 2020 Ford Escape. Expedition has factory rail racks and Escape has factory rails with no cross bars. Looking at Thule Motion XL 16 cu ft or 18 cu ft or Yakima skybox. Wondering best recommended fit.

In order to carry the box on the Escape, you'll need a roof rack. You can install a Thule roof rack using the following parts:

-53 inch WingBar Evo Crossbars, part # TH711400
-Evo Clamp Roof Rack Feet, part # TH710601
-Vehicle Specific Fit Kit, part # TH96RV

Either the Thule Motion XT # TH629806 18 cf, the # TH629706 16 cf, or the Yakima 16 cf # Y95AV or 18 cf SkyBox # Y07336 will fit on both vehicles, but you'll need to determine if they'll interfere with opening the rear hatch fully on the Escape. You can take some measurements to determine this. The roof of your Expedition is long enough that any of these will work fine.

Find a point on the Escape's roof rails about 2 inches rearward of the front of the rail. From this point, measure rearward until you reach the seam between the roof and the hatch. This distance will be the minimum front clearance distance needed. If your measurement is LESS than the required clearance for the cargo box you want to use, then the box will allow full use of the rear hatch.

The Thule Motion XT 16 cf # TH629706 requires a minimum of 47-1/2 inches of clearance for the hatch to open. The 18 cf model # TH629806 needs at least 51-1/4 inches. For the SkyBoxNX 16, the 16 cf # Y95AV requires at least 47 inches while the SkyBox18 cf # Y07336 needs 57 inches.

As you can see, the Thule Motion boxes require less clearance, so they'd be most likely to work for you. Please let us know if you have additional questions.
