Easy Brake Controller Solutions for 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Question:
HELP! Im not a mechanic and Im trying to understand the set up of the trailer wiring harness on my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Question: I have a factory installed tow package on the vehicle. I have a 4-way and a 7-way connector installed next to my hitch. If Im using the 7-way connector, do I still need to install a brake controller in the cabin of my Jeep? Shouldnt a brake controller already be installed somewhere on the vehicle as part of my tow package? Thanks,

Your 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have a factory brake controller installed in it although it has the 7-way trailer wiring. Only some full size trucks will come with a factory brake controller and even then it's an upgraded option. So the easiest brake controller solution you have is the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 which would plug right into the 7-way and once synced to your smartphone would be ready to use. Or you could install a traditional brake controller like the iCommand part # TK63VR with the install harness part # TK93VR for a more cost-effective solution.
Not all trailers with 7-ways have brakes which is why not every vehicle with a 7-way comes with a controller and some of them have hydraulic brakes which don't use a brake controller.
