Recommended Crossbars Length for Using Cargo Box and Kayak Carrier on a 2012 VW Jetta SportWagen
Question:
Hello, I am looking at having a yakima timberline roof rack installed on my 2012 vw jetta sportwagon. I would like to carry a thin cargo box, rocket box 14 and a kayak, on a J style mount. I am wondering what size bars I need in order to fit both of those? Clearly a set of 50inch bars look better on this vehicle, but do I need 55 or 60? Thank you.

For your 2012 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen you'll want to use the TimberLine Towers # Y33TR with the 60" JetStream crossbars which come in Black # Y00426 . Yakima actually doesn't offer 55" long crossbars and the 50" bars would be too short for the box and kayak carrier so the 60" bars are what you need.
In addition to the Yakima RocketBox Pro 14 # Y07192 I recommend using the Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs # Y04073 because it is easier to install and use, plus it uses 2 clamps per upright which just offers more stability.
If you want to add matching locks to all of the components then you'll also need the 8-core set # Y07208.
