Choosing the Correct Weight Distribution System for a Palomino Trek G145 with Tongue Weight 427 lbs

Question:

I have a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse front wheel drive tow vehicle. I recently purchased a Palomino Trek G145 with a dry weight of 2790 lbs. and dry tongue weight of 288 lbs. GVWR of the trailer is 3750 lbs. So max tongue weight at 15 would be 562 lbs. My loaded tongue weight is 427 lbs. All supplies in my tow vehicle are loaded ahead of the rear axle. My dealer sold me a Pro series round bar WD hitch with sway control rated at 750 lbs. Is this over sized for my trailer? Would it be too stiff?

Typically weight distribution systems will accommodate a range of tongue weights. As long as the loaded tongue weight of your trailer falls within that range, then you should not have a problem using the system. I am not sure which system you have, but I would first verify with your dealer or with Pro Series what the tongue weight range is for your system.

We carry a Pro Series Weight Distribution System, # PS49582, that has a tongue weight range of 550 lbs to 750 lbs. If this is the same system that you have, then this system may be rated a little high for your set up if your loaded tongue weight only reaches about 427 lbs. This, of course, would reduce the effectiveness of the weight distribution.

I would recommend a system with a larger tongue weight range like the Reese Weight Distribution System, # RP65509 which has a tongue weight range of 200 lbs to 600 lbs, or # 49569 which has a tongue weight range of 400 lbs to 800 lbs. You would want to choose the higher rated system if you think that your trailer tongue weight plus anything loaded behind the rear axle of your truck would ever exceed 600 lbs.

Keep in mind that these two systems do not come with sway control, but you could add a sway control bar like part # 83660 to either system.

I attached an article on weight distribution systems that covers the different aspects of weight distribution and sway control for you to check out. It seems like you have a pretty good grasp on weight distribution and you may find this article helpful. I have also attached links to each of the parts that I have referenced.
