I was able to confirm with Curt that the correct hitch for the 2009 Audi A4 Avant Wagon is the Curt Class I Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C11195, which will provide you with a 1-1/4" Class I receiver on your vehicle. If you're going to be towing a light weight trailer with this hitch you'll also need trailer wiring and a ball mount/hitch ball combo.
For the wiring I recommend using the Tekonsha # 119250KIT because we've found that the converter boxes on the Tekonsha kits are a bit more reliable long term than the others available. For a ball mount you'll want to use something like the Curt # C45521 which is for use on 1-1/4" receivers and can be used in either a rise or drop position to allow you to keep your setup pulling flat. This ball mount is compatible with hitch balls with a 3/4" shank diameter, so you can use the # A-80 (1-7/8" hitch ball) or # A-82 (2" hitch ball) with it depending on the coupler of the trailer you're towing.
I've linked some review videos of these parts that you may want to have a look at, as well.
