How To Send Constant Power to 12 Volt Pin On Trailer Connector On 2020 Ford F-350
Question:
So on both my 2019 and 2020 Ford F-350 trucks, my trailer has an electric jack which is normally powered by plugging the trailer into the 7-pin connector. On my Ram trucks that Ive had, you plug it in, the jack and trailer cargo lights all work, no issues. With the Fords, its different. With my last one which was a 2019, a shop told me they had to run a wire from the battery back to the connector to supply constant power to it. That allowed for the power jack and cargo lights to work. With my new one which is a 2020, the same problem has arisen. I had been told the Ford only supplies power when placed in drive, so the first night I had it, I plugged my trailer in while it was in park, nothing worked. I put the truck into D and applied the Parking Brake. Everything then worked. Now when I go to do that same thing, the power trailer jack no longer works. Is there another solution to this without installing an onboard battery to the trailer to installing a wire from my battery of the truck back to the connector?

The best solution as you alluded to is to bypass the factory "Smart Tow" trailer package which is what is responsible for only sending power to the 12 volt pin when the vehicle is in gear. This is actually pretty easy to do and we have a kit which will have everything you need to do so, the Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Motorhomes part # RM-156-75.
In order to install this kit simply attach one of the wire leads to the battery and then to the circuit breaker. Once this is done, you can run the other lead from the circuit breaker to the trailer connector. You'll need to cut the 12 volt wire from the factory trailer connector and just cap it off but this should not create any problems.
