Yes hitch bike racks can be used on the 2016 GMC Terrain with no issues!
For a good quality hanging rack the Thule Hitching Post Pro - Folding Tilting 4 Bike Rack w Anti-Sway -part # TH934XTR is a great rack. It is not for use with carbon framed bikes however.
For a platform style and one compatible with carbon frames the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches part # KU74FR is a really good one.
I can provide a more specific recommendation if you will fill me in on the type of bikes you plan on carrying. This is of course if you haven't already got a good one picked out.
If you do not already have a hitch the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver part # e98865 is a great choice. Is is a custom fit for your vehicle and is easy to install.
