Will Installing Tekonsha 119190KIT Trailer Wiring Harness on 2018 BMW X5 Require Software Update
Question:
I just finished installing the Draw-Tite receiver part 75600 and Wiring Harness kit part 119190KIT on subject vehicle. I have since read on some blogs that the vehicle needs a software update that recognizes when a trailer is attached specifically by montoring resistance changes when the trailer wiring is plugged in. Some of the bloggers intimate that if the vehicle doesnt know a trailer is installed, the stability control system may fightinch the trailer and cause dangerous compensation. A secondary concern is the backup sensors alarm everytime the vehicle is put in reverse - even if just the ball hitch is installed - not dangerous, but certainly annoying. Please let me know if I need the software upgradeto operate my vehicle safely with a trailer and whether it will work with the Wiring Harness kit part 119190KIT some bloggers imply that only a BMW trailer wiring harness will recognize the trailer. Also, can you help with a source for the software upgrade? My local dealer is completely ignorant. Thanks

According to my contact in the Tech Services department at Tekonsha, the # 119250KIT will have no impact on the vehicle which would require a software update because the voltage to power the trailer lights is obtained directly from the battery. Your backup sensors will sound with a trailer in place, but only while in reverse. You should be able to shut those off if they become bothersome.
I've linked you to an install video showing the harness being installed on an older X5 model. The procedure on your 2018 will be similar.
