Does Malone Hanger 3 Bike Rack Fit a 2020 BMW 5 Series Sedan and Recommendation for Tesla Model 3

Question:

Thanks so much for this. And what about the Saris bones EX 2-4 bike rack for this car? And do you think the trunk racks for the 5 series in general are not a great option? If so do you have a better one? And finally are there any bike rack options for the Tesla Model 3? I'm open to higher end options but would prefer to not spend a while lot of money if I don't have to. Thanks again,

Yes, the Malone Hanger 3 Bike Rack # MPG2139 will fit your 2020 BMW 5 Series sedan. We have done an installation video on a 2008 Chevy Impala that I'm attaching for you to get an idea of fitment on a sedan but obviously it may look a little different for your application since you have a different vehicle.

I would like to point out that Malone is more of an entry-level bike rack company and some of the more experienced bike rack companies don't recommend using a 3-bike rack on the 5 Series. In their opinion the trunk can't handle the weight. So if you want to stick with the Malone brand then you'll want to make sure not to load more than 2 bikes.

If you'd like to go with a 2-bike rack then I recommend going with the Yakima FullBack # Y02634 because it is very easy to use/install, plus it looks really great. The FullBack uses 4 straps to install so we don't have the extra 2 straps that can be a little difficult to mess with, and the cradles are a lower profile and use the removable zip strips so it's a lot easier to load your bikes. We don't have an install video of this on a BMW, but we do have a video of the HalfBack # Y02636 (which is similar in style to the FullBack) on a 2013 BMW 3 Series that I'm linking for you to check out.

Please note that if any of your bikes lacks a horizontal top tube then you might need an adapter bar like the Yakima # Y02531 to hold your bike(s) level and promote ground clearance.

None of the Saris Bones trunk mount bike racks will fit a 2020 BMW 5 Series so the Yakima FullBack # Y02634 would still be my recommendation for just a bike rack on your BMW. Typically the best setup for carrying bikes is installing a trailer hitch and using a hitch-mount bike rack simply because there is no vehicle contact and you can generally carry heavier bikes at the hitch so they are more versatile. Since you're also asking about a bike rack for a Tesla Model 3 and you're trying to be price-conscious I have an entirely different solution for you that I think you're really going to like. We have a variety of bike racks from SeaSucker that you can mount directly to the roof of either car in a matter of seconds. SeaSucker uses something called a vacuum cup which is much more safe and secure than the common suction cup (they are completely different to be honest). Each vacuum cup has a pull strength of 210 lbs and you can see the strength in the attached video with the VW van. For your application you can use the Talon # 298-BT1004 (1 bike), Mini Bomber # 298-BM2006 (2 bikes), or the Bomber # 298-BB3008 (3 bikes) and it is perfectly safe for the roof on your BMW and your Tesla. There are special instructions regarding the Tesla model 3 though and I'm attaching them here for you to reference, along with review videos for each bike rack option. Using a SeaSucker bike rack eliminates the need to install hitches on both vehicle plus they are a lot easier to store than your standard bike rack.
