Troubleshooting Brake Controller That Wont Power Up on 1999 Dodge Ram 1500
Question:
Brake controller light does not come on. Checked fuses, they all look good. When I turn on my headlights if I turn on my left turn signal with the trailer connected, the left turn signal does not work on truck or trailer. If I disconnect the trailer, the left turn signal works on the truck. I have a 7 way plug with 5 wires.

If the 20A fuse in location # 20 in the fuse box under the hood isn't blown, I'd recommend using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 on the black wire feeding the brake controller. If you're getting power on that circuit but the controller isn't powering up, the controller is likely bad and needs replacement. You can try disconnecting power for a minute or two and powering it back up after a few minutes to see if the microprocessor resets itself. If you're using a brake controller wiring harness, make sure you're using # 3020-P.
If you need a replacement, for an inexpensive controller that still has features like self-leveling and 3 different boost levels for different trailers you can go with the Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160.
