Can Trailer Wiring for a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country be Routed Outside of the Van

Question:

I went to uhaul for an install. When I picked up my van the plug-in was in the floor on the left side by the tail light cover. You have to open the dorr and pull it out and close it on the wiring. Please help me and tell me this is NOT a normal install!!!

Actually, that is a typical installation for the wiring harnesses for a 2006 Chrysler T and C. Take a look at the video I have linked as reference. The weather stripping on the rear of the vehicle between the hatch and bumper protects the wiring from damage as long as it is not in the latching mechanism.

It is possible to route the wiring under the vehicle but you will most likely have to drill a hole. First you will need to remove the floor panels in the cargo area until you get to the metal. Look for a grommet or any kind of exit point that you can run wires through. If there are none available you will have to drill a hole.

I would drill a small hole because it is easier to seal. You will need to cut off the 4-Way end in such a way so that you have the splices on the inside of the van away from the elements when you reach that step. With the hole drilled you will route the cut end from the 4-Way from under the vehicle, through the hole. On the inside of the vehicle, splice the wires back onto the wires from the inside part of the harness. Make sure to seal the hole up with silicone.
