Availability of Class IV Hitch for 2008 Dodge Dakota

Question:

Im about to buy a 2008 Dadge Dakota Crew Cab 4.7L V8. It does not have a hitch. Dodge says that this can tow 7,000 lbs. But if I but a Class 3 hitch that limits me to around 5,000. Can I put a class 4 on here that will help me take full advantage of the possible 7,000 lbs available? Thanks!

Most Class III hitches will have a Weight Carrying Capacity and a Weight Distribution Capacity.

There is not a Class IV hitch available for the 2008 Dakota, but the Curt Class III receiver, part # 13230 has an 8000 lb capacity when used with a weight distribution system. The W/D system will use leverage provided by spring bars to transfer a portion of the trailer tongue weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle, thus allowing the hitch to bear more weight. Although the hitch is rated at 8000 lbs when used with weight distribution, you will still be limited to the 7000 lb towing capacity stated by Dodge.

If you will be towing near capacity with your Dodge, we recommend installing a transmission cooler to protect your transmission. The best place to mount the cooler is directly behind the grille, in front of the radiator. Installing the cooler in this location will NOT restrict air flow to your radiator. I would recommend the # D13503. This cooler measures 11 inches wide by 8-3/4 inches tall by 7/8 inch thick. You will want to measure the available space behind the grill to ensure the cooler will fit.

If you would care to reply with the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer you were planning on towing plus the weight of anything that will be stowed in the truck bed behind the rear axle, I would be happy to recommend a weight distribution system for you.

I have linked to the install instructions for the hitch, as well as links to some FAQ articles about weight distribution and transmission coolers that you might find helpful.
