Brake Controller Solution to Avoid Setting Off Error Code on 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Question:

I have a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid that came with the factory prep tow package and 4-pin connector. I'm wondering if a brake controller can be installed. I've read installing a brake controller will set off an error code in the Highlander's computer so I'd like to avoid this. What do you suggest?

While most traditional brake controllers will require you to tap into your Highlander's brake switch, potentially setting off an error code in the vehicle's computer, I do have a couple of brake controller options that would instead pull power from your trailer connector, leaving your vehicle's wiring intact.

First, you'll need to upgrade your 4-Pole connector with our 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L. Your existing 4-Pole plugs into the back of the adapter and all you need to do from there is run your power wire directly to the vehicle's battery and attach your ground.

For a wireless brake controller, I highly recommend the Curt Echo # C51180, because it simply plugs in line with your 7-way trailer connector. There's no drilling, mounting, or splicing required. It uses your Bluetooth enabled smartphone or tablet as a monitor and remote control. Because of how portable it is, the Echo can't be locked down in any way, which could be a drawback for people worried about theft since it would require plugging and unplugging the unit every time.

If you prefer the convenience of a one time installation, without sacrificing wireless connectivity in order to avoid setting off any codes on the Highlander, then the Autowbrake # 3430001 is the way to go since it permanently mounts on the trailer instead and once its installed, it can be used with any tow vehicle. It also comes with its own wireless remote, which means you're not tying up your phone when towing.

Both options offer proportional braking which automatically adjusts trailer's braking based on deceleration of tow vehicle as well as a manual override option for immediate braking in case of an emergency. I've attached links to installation videos on both controllers as well as the wiring upgrade kit mentioned above for you to check out.
