Maximum Cargo Carrier Tongue Weight
Question:
If my hitch has a tongue weight of 500lbs, how much is the maximum weight I can load on this cargo carrier?

Expert Reply:
While your hitch may have a 500lb tongue weight capacity and the 24x60 Reese Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # 63153 has a 500lb capacity, a part missing here is your vehicle's maximum tongue weight. Depending on the vehicle, it can be in excess or below the maximum tongue weight of the hitch and carrier.
If you're vehicle has a 250lb maximum tongue weight capacity as an example, that's your maximum regardless of the hitch and carrier ratings. Your owners manual will be the best place to look to confirm this information before use.
Once you decide which measure is your tongue weight limit, the lowest between your hitch and your vehicle, subtract the weight of this carrier which is 62 pounds and you will know how much cargo you will be able to add.
