Is it possible you connected the brake controller's wiring to the wrong connections on your 2012 Chevy Silverado? For your truck you should have ran the red wire to the black wire of the brake controller adapter, dark blue of the truck to blue of the controller, light blue or orange to red of the brake controller, and white to white.
I also attached a help article on installing brake controllers in trucks of your generation as well. In case your truck had a factory brake controller you were trying to replace I attached a help article that covers how to bypass the integrated controller of a truck like yours to install an aftermarket one as well. Note the wiring colors used for the install is different but is listed at the article as well.
