Question:
What is the length of the shock in its closed position and where to mount the gas shock when the hatch is closed so it doesn't bottom out before the hatch is closed?

The Taylor Made Marine Gas Strut for Boat Hatches # 3691836 measures approximately 12-1/2 inches in the closed position, although an exact measurement is difficult due to the nature of gas struts, as you can imagine. In regards to mounting it, I'm not 100 percent sure what you mean by "bottom out" before the hatch is closed. The strut attaches to a pair of 10 mm ball sockets so it will swivel. They are designed to be replacements so the best thing to do is measure your current strut when your hatch is open in order to get the proper length.
I have added a link to a video review of this strut for you to check out, as well as a link to our entire selection of struts in case you need a different length.
