How To Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector On a Service Body Truck with Separate Brake/Turn Lights
Question:
We are having difficulties wiring up some of the Hazmat trucks with 3 wire system, having separate brake wire along with turn and tail lights. When we build the bed for these vehicles, we typically use 3 LED tail lights per side, each 2 wire connection - 1 red lamp would be brake/turn, 1 red tail lamp and lastly 1 white back-up light. Our problem then is how do we convert this after the lamps to allow a standard 7 plug or 4 wire plug to work? Is a converter needed or is there a simple way to wire this up? We would rather not use a converter box if it is not needed.

In order to install a standard trailer connector on a vehicle that uses a separate lighting system you will indeed need to use a converter box to convert the wiring from separate to combined. The Universal Wiring Harness w/ ModuLite and Brake Controller Harness part # 22551 would be a great option for the hazmat trucks as this is an all inclusive kit with everything needed to not only combined the tail light circuits for the trailer connector but also install a brake controller as well as charge a trailer battery if needed.
I have attached a list of our exterior trailer lights for the truck body as well if you are interested.
