Using Tire Chains While Towing With a 2019 GMC Sierra 2500

Question:

I am concerned about the extra weight put on the rear tires while towing a 5th wheel trailer. Is there a special type of chain that should be used while towing a heavy 5th wheel. Truck is a 2019 GMC 2500HD 4x4. Tires are the stock all terrain type. Trailer is a 38ft Toy Hauler that weighs approximately 14,000 to 14,500 lbs. Will / can the chains damage the tires? Is there a special type of chains for this application? What are your recommendations? Thanks

It is acceptable to use tire chains while towing a trailer, yes. However, if the vehicle's suspension sags with the trailer coupled that could then reduce your clearance needed for the tire chains. That said, if the vehicle's suspension sags you are going to have more problems than clearance some of which are much more crucial to the performance of the vehicle. I recommend adding the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2596 which will help prevent sagging therefore not limiting tire chain clearance or affecting the vehicle's performance while towing such as braking, stability, etc.

Then for tire chains, the Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains part # TH01594267 are what I recommend for 245/75-17 tires. The Konig Self-Tensioning Chains are one of the easiest to install options on the market and they are class s rated so they will provide the best clearance. If you have a different tire size please just let me know what that is.

If the truck does not sag while coupled then you can do away with the air bags just be sure to check your clearance with the chains installed and trailer coupled.
