Tow Bar and Accessories Compatible with XL Base Plates on a 2009 Chevy HHR
Question:
It says this [523159-1] is for EZ base plates. My base plates are the XL type. Will this bracket work with my base plates?

The Roadmaster base plates, # 523159-1, are base plates for a 2008 to 2010 Chevy HHR SS models only. It sounds like you need a compatible tow bar for the XL style base plates you already have on your 2009 HHR.
The most popular option for XL style base plates is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to a video review for you. You will also need safety cables like # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground.
You will also need a lighting solution to flat tow your HHR. For a permanent solution (if you will be towing the vehicle frequently) you can use the diode kit # RM-154. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation for you. If you will not be towing the HHR often, you can use a magnetic light kit like # RM-2120.
Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on both vehicles. You will also need a stop light switch kit, # RM-751428, so the system can alert you when the brakes of your towed vehicle are being applied.
I have included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing for you. You will want to consult the vehicle owners manual to determine if you can flat tow this vehicle and on the proper procedure for flat towing.
