How Do I Know Which Hub Assembly to Use on My Trailer?

Question:

What is the best way to determine what size hub replacement is needed if manufacturer of the trailer is unknown? I can send pictures if that would be helpful. Thanks!

The best way to determine which hub replacement you'll need for your trailer is with the trailer capacity and, most importantly, determining which bearings are used in the hub. You'll need to pull the hubs off and remove the bearings to find the bearing and seal numbers that are stamped on the backs of them in order to match them up with a new hub. If you can't find the numbers stamped on the backs of the bearings and seals, you can use a micrometer to measure the inner and outer dimensions of them. The other thing you'll need to know when choosing a replacement hub is the bolt pattern on your current hub, so that you don't have to also replace the wheels.

I've linked two of our help articles on trailer bearings that you can check out; they'll tell you more about the installation and what bearings are most popular on which axles. I've also linked an article on how to measure for your bolt pattern.

For reference, the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-258-5UC1 you were looking at uses the same # L44649 inner and outer bearing, # L44610 races and # 10-9 grease seal.

If you can tell me which bearings, races and seals, as well as the capacity of your axle I can help you determine which hub is going to work best for you as a replacement. Your axle should have a plate or sticker in the middle of it that has the serial number and capacity on it. If you can't find that information you can also measure the spindles; check the attached photo which shows you what to measure.
