How to Connect Gooseneck Safety Chains to Coupler With D-Rings

Question:

I have a gooseneck horse trailer that utilizes a non removable D-ring to attach safety chains. The chains that were on it when I purchased the trailer were wrapped around the ring once. What is the proper way to attach safety chains in this scenario and what would you recommend? The trailers GTW is 7500lbs. Thanks.

Usually the safety chains are attached to the coupler with bolts and then the clevises connect to the U bolts or Rings on the bed of the truck. In this case, since you're not bolting on to anything, the previous owner has just wrapped them through the D-rings to secure them to the coupler. Doing it this way will provide a secure connection, so there's nothing really to worry about in regards to the security of your current connection.

If you're looking to create a new set of chains for yourself, I recommend using the Reese Safety Chain Kit # 49150 and adding the Titan Chain Clevis Hook # TCSLIP-G70-13-L to the ends without the clevises so that you can connect to both the D-ring on your coupler as well as the rings in your truck bed. You could also loop the chain through the D ring and connect both clevises to the truck safety chain rings- either way will work.
