How To Choose the Correct Replacement Leaf Spring for Old Boat Trailer with No Axle Capacity

Question:

I recently refurbished an old fiberglass boat and its original trailer, both from 1960. No axle capacity stickers or anything else. What capacity spring would I need If the gross weight of the boat and trailer are 1360lbs? Thanks,

Expert Reply:

The weight capacity of the leaf spring should be based off the weight capacity of the axle. If you cannot find a sticker on the axle that lists the weight capacity then you can go off of the cargo weight. If the cargo weighs around 1,360 lbs I would go with a 2,000 lb spring capacity which is pretty common for smaller boat trailers. I have attached for you below a list of these options which will vary by the unloaded eye to eye length. The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring part # e84SR is our most popular option and measures 20-3/8" from eye to eye though the one you have now may be longer than this as leaf springs stretch over time.
