Cargo Boxes That Will Clear Rear Hatch of 2011 Subaru Outback
Question:
Looking for a Cargo Box for Subaru Outback 2011. I m looking at the skybox 12 or Pulse Alpine or rocket box 11 all to mount on factory cross bars. I want to be able to open my hatch door without hitting the Cargo box.I also want to be able to mount 2 at least 1bike tray at the same time. What do you recommend? Cheers

In order to determine your clearance, you will need to do some measuring.
The Thule Pulse Alpine, part # TH613 offers 24 inches of rear clearance. If the distance from the middle of your rear roof crossbar is more than 24 inches, you will have sufficient clearance to open the lift gate.
Yakima provides their clearance information in a different manner. They recommend you slide the front crossbar all the way forward (if it is moveable) and measure rearward to the hatch/roof seam. The SkyBox 12, part # Y07175 measures 57 inches from the center of where the box would attach to the front crossbar to the rear of the box. The RocketBox 11, part # Y07149 measures 62 inches from the center of the front crossbar mounting location to the rear of the box. If the distance from the center of your front crossbar to the hatch seam is greater than either of those measurements, then either Yakima box would work great for you.
If you offset the box to one side or the other, you should be able to fit at least one bike rack alongside of the box. If you have at least 53 inches of available space on the crossbars, you should be able to mount two bike racks. Make sure you read the owners manual to determine the weight capacity of your existing roof rack, which is typically between 100 and 150 lbs and make sure it is not exceeded.
I have provided links to installation instructions for all three boxes, as well as some product demonstration videos you might find helpful.
