How to Connect 4-Way on Kia to 5-Way on Venture Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a trailer Venture with a 5-pin wiring connector to a 4-pin wiring system on the car Kia Telluride... see photos. How do I resolve the difference in these systems? Thanks

The extra pin/circuit on the 5-Way connector for your Venture boat trailer is likely to activate the reverse lockout solenoid on the actuator (so you can backup the trailer without the brakes engaging). The 4-Way on your Kia can technically still connect to the 5-Way on the trailer to power its basic signal lights, but you would lose this reverse function.

To maintain the reverse lockout function on the trailer the best solution is with the 4-Way to 5-Way Adapter # 20036. This will simply plug into the 4-Way on your vehicle to provide a 5-Way at the other end (which connects to the trailer). The additional blue wire coming from the adapter then just needs to connect to the reverse light circuit wire behind the tail lights of your Kia Telluride.

You can use a circuit tester like # PTW2979 to find the wire behind the tail lights that only gets power when the reverse lights are on. Once that blue wire is connected all 5 circuits on the trailer's 5-Way will be active. I have attached a sample install video to assist.
