I recommend a platform style bike rack and the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches # KU74FR specifically that uses a tire cradle and J-hook design to mount your bikes by the tire without any frame contact. The rack is easier to load with a step through design so you don't have to bend or stoop securing your bikes to the rack.

If your Townies have fenders, the Kuat won't work but another solid platform option is the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # SA4412B. These will mount your bike via the frame and by the tire via cradles to provide an alternative for bikes with fenders.
