Brake Controller Recommendation For A 2019 Mercedes GLS
Question:
Hello, I just purchased a Mercedes GLS 450 and would like to tow our RV this weekend. Do I need to add an electronic breaking system like in our old Toyota 4runner? RV dealers wont touch my new car, and the dealership doesnt seem to know how to set my car up for towing. What do I need to get on the road this weekend? Thanks,

Yes you will need a brake controller to tow your RV as you did with your Toyota 4Runner to provide safe braking.
If you have your previous brake controller from your 4Runner, you could install it in your GLS 450 with a new wiring harness. I would be happy to recommend one if you can let me know what model controller you have.
If you need a new brake controller and your Mercedes GLS 450 already has the 7-Way connector, the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 is my recommendation. This Bluetooth-enabled brake controller wirelessly connects to your smartphone, turning your phone into a brake control interface. There is no additional wiring and mounting of components to your RV to get started.
That said one thing to also mention here is that this brake controller while easy to install and use, has had some issues on German vehicles before. Those issues were caused because of a lower power draw at the 7-way. That is addressed using the Trailer Connector Adapter w/ Lamp-Out Sensor Bypass - 7-Way RV to 7-Way RV - Vehicle End # 20142 as a simple add on.
