Performance Difference Between California and 49 State Legal Superchips Programmer 2001 Ford Diesel

Question:

2001 Ford F-250 with 7.3l diesel and auto trans. Currently in California, but may not be forever. What are the performance differences or other differences between the SU1845 and the CARB-compliant version. IE, what would I be giving up to settle for the California one? Thanks

Expert Reply:

The performance gains between the CARB compliant Superchips Flashpaq # SU4845 and the non-CARB part # SU1845 are significant as the CARB programmer can give up to 65 horsepower and 115 ft lbs of torque whereas the non-CARB can provide up to 111 additional horsepower and 205 ft lbs of torque.

The other thing you'll want to consider is that going with the higher power option will put quite a bit more strain on your vehicle's transmission. So the CARB programmer will be legal right now for you and might prevent you from hurting the vehicle with too much torque. It's very common that when you turn up a truck like yours the transmission doesn't like it and fails sooner than normal.
