What Parts are Needed to Flat Tow a 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Question:

Just making sure this is for a Jeep Grand Wagoneer and not for the smaller Wagoneer models. Also, does this mount allow the factory front bumper to be left on the vehicle? Thank you!

I checked with Roadmaster and confirmed that base plates # 1403-1 are for the 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. There is a completely different part number for the regular Wagoneer. In addition to the base plates you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and a braking system.

But first, check your owners manual for the proper towing procedure and/or any additional parts that may be needed if the vehicle can be flat towed.

The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to a video review of the tow bar for you to view. For safety cables, you can use # RM-643. The coiled design will help keep them off of the ground.

For lighting, there are several possible options depending on your specific needs and towing frequency. I have included a link to an FAQ article that covers the various options that will help you choose what will work best for you.

Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on both vehicles.

I have also included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing for you.
