How To Move Carpod Cargo Carrier Away From Exhaust Heat on SUV

Question:

I recently purchased the Carpod cargo carrier M2200. What would be the best option to move this carrier out of the path of my SUVs exhaust? A hitch extension? A hitch riser? A dual extender/riser?

The exhaust melting cargo on a cargo carrier like the Carpod part # M2200 is not as common as you may think unless the cargo carrier is the exact same height at the exhaust or relatively close to it. We typically recommend at least 12 inches between the exhaust tip and the carrier to prevent melting. If you are experiencing excessive heat from the exhaust the best way to fix this is point the exhaust down with an exhaust tip.

I recommend to use an exhaust tip that points away from the Carpod for example part # MF35180. I have attached an article with the turndown exhaust tips we have available.

You could technically move the Carpod up by using a Curt Dual Hitch Extender part # D-192 but this will cut your tongue weight rating of the hitch in half so you want to keep that in mind. Also the maximum weight capacity of the extender is 3,500 lbs so that would limit your hitch as well. The Curt Hitch extender would lift the Carpod up about 3-1/4". This may be enough room to keep the cargo carrier out of the path of the exhaust but probably not enough if the exhaust is close. The best option is to use the turn down tip.
