Troubleshooting Brake Controller Not Sensing a Trailer Connection
Question:
When I plug my boat trailer into my Navigator, the P2 does not recognize the trailer being connected. When I start the car it indicates connected whether the trailer is connected or not and gives a reading when the brakes are applied.

Sounds like your issue is related to two things. One being that your vehicle's trailer wiring is not active unless the vehicle is turned on which is why you see no connection with the vehicle, and the other being that there's probably corrosion on your trailer wiring connector which is causing the brake controller to sense a small amperage draw and therefore thinks a trailer is connected. This is a very common issue and all you have to do is clean the pins of the trailer wiring connectors with sandpaper.
