Can a Camper With ST175/80x13 Load Range C Tires Be Upgraded to Load Range D Tires

Question:

My camper has ST175/80x13 load range C. I would like to go to a load range D in this size. Is this a good idea? I know this does not increase the load carring of my camper I just do not like the quat of the load range C tires I always keep them at 50psi.

Going from a ST175/80x13 load range C tire to a load range D tire in the Kenda Tires and Wheel, part # AM31985, is no problem. As you mentioned, changing to the higher load range will not increase the amount of weight that your camper can carry.

If you are using radial tires there will be a bulge look to the sidewall of the tire because of the way a radial tire is constructed. Since the belts or cords inside the tire run from bead seat to bead seat across the radius of the tire it gives the radial tire a flex that keeps more of the tread contact patch on the ground.

You will want to make sure and run the maximum air pressure (65 psi) that is listed on the sidewall of the load range D tire. If a tire is inflated to a lower air pressure it will reduce the amount of weight that the tire can carry. If a heavier load is put on the trailer tire then what is recommended for that air pressure it will cause the sidewall of the tire to heat up quicker and cause the tire to fail. It is always recommended to inflate your tires when they are cold.

You will also want to make sure the tires on your camper are matching. Do not mix tires that have different load ranges or tire construction (radial or bias).

I am including a link to a FAQ page on trailer tires. It will contain some helpful information.
