Boat Trailer Tires Wearing Faster with Bigger Motor Installed on Boat

Question:

Ive been having problems with my trailer tires wearing really fast. Did not have this problem before I switched out the axle, leaf springs, and motor. The tires seem to be wearing very evenly and Ive had the trailer axle aligned in a shop but the problem still persists. Could this be because the trailer still isnt aligned properly? Or does my new motor weigh more and I need more heavy duty tires? Boat is a Carolina skiff J16 with a 40hp motor. Used to have a 25hp motor on it. Ive also moved the boat up more on the bunks to help distribute the weight more evenly. Current tires are 4.80x12. Thanks!

From what you are describing I bet your tires are wearing quicker because of the extra weight. Since 4.80-12 tires like part # TT48012C have a max rating of 990 lbs are 90 psi if you are exceeding this weight limit or you previously had hardly any weight on your trailer this would cause the tires to wear quickly.

With the weight rating being 990 lbs that means per axle the most weight your tires can handle is 1,980 lbs (provided that your tires do have that 990 lb rating). I recommend loading your trailer up like you would for a trip and weighing it on a commercial scale to see if you are overloading the tires or not. Another thing to note is that you need to stay under the speed rating for your tires as that will promote premature wear as well. The tire I referenced above has an 81 mph speed rating.

If you do need to get beefier tires just let me know and I can help you choose replacement tires.
