Lightest Bike Rack for 2014 Prius and 40 lb eBike with Fenders
Question:
Hello! I own a 2014 Prius a regular one and just purchased a Trek ebike that has fenders and weighs ~45 lbs with battery, and ~40 without. I know I need a hitch rack, but most of them are so heavy and I am a single 60-ish woman who will be taking the rack on and off myself. No 50 lb racks pls. Also, the bike is heavy enough I think I will be best getting a tray style rack. I am wondering whether this Hollywood Trail Rider is the best option? I know the Sport rider has better features but it is heavier and I would rather get a 35 lb rack that I can take on and off myself...and so few tray style racks seem to easily accommodate fenders. If you recommend this rack because of the weight, would you recommend I get a 2inch hitch installed rather than a 1.25inch hitch? I am thinking of going to get a hitch installed today and should get some guidance from whatever rack I will be getting. Thanks so much!

This Hollywood Racks Trail Rider 2 Bike Platform Rack # HR200Z is a fine option. Weighing 34lbs with a capacity of 45lbs per bike, it is sufficient for your Trek ebike. One consideration with this rack however is that if your Trek ebike has an angled/curved crossbar, an adapter bar would be needed. The Rhino-Rack Bike Frame Adapter Bar for Women's and Alternative Frame Bikes # RRRBCA021 is my recommendation if this is the case.
Another option to consider is a platform style, frame mounted rack that makes loading and unloading easier. The Thule EasyFold XT 2 E-Bike Platform Rack # TH903202 is a very popular option because the ramp allows you to roll heavier bikes onto the carrier. It is 45lbs so a bit heavier but the ease of loading and capacity to carry your heavier bike make it an attractive rack to include.
Both of these racks I recommend will fit Class I, II, or III hitches and the weight of the bike rack won't overload your Prius. My recommendation for a hitch is the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24847 because it provides a slim profile and attractive gloss finish.
