How To Install Aftermarket Brake Controller On a Ram 2500 Without Dealer Computer Reprogramming
Question:
my question is, can you still use an aftermarket brake controller if you do not get the factory one removed from the trucks computer? I understand it will give you a fault light or warning light on the dash, but will an aftermarket controller still work until you can get the factory one removed?

If you wanted to install an aftermarket brake controller on your 2011 Ram 2500 and replace the factory integrated brake controller (ITBC) then you have two options. The first and easiest option would be to use the pre-wired plug under your dash and then have the dealer remove the factory integrated brake controller (ITBC) from the computer. The aftermarket brake controller would not function properly unless you had the dealer remove the factory integrated brake controller (ITBC) from the computer using the above plug.
However, if you were to not use the plug under your dash and wire the aftermarket brake controller completely separate of the factory pre-wring then you could get away with not having the dealer remove the factory integrated brake controller (ITBC). This process would entail running your own power wire directly to the battery, running your own brake output wire directly to the back of the 7-way, and splicing into the stop light switch circuit. If you sever the factory brake output wire then this would likely cause an error message but the aftermarket brake controller will still work just fine with this option.
For your 2011 Ram 2500, I highly recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller part # RED44FR as this allows for more control of your trailer's brakes than any other brake controller we offer and the main box installs out of sight. If you choose to use the factory plug and have the computer flashed then you will also need the TrailerMate Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers part # TM75273.
