When is Wheel Retainer Ring Needed for Dexter Hubs and Wheels

Question:

Hello: I have an older model 8 stud axle with dual wheels received as loose parts. Im wondering if or when the wheel retaining ring is to be used. This is a stud - mount conical nut system with oil bath hubs. Thanks,

The wheel retainer ring that is included in certain hub assemblies like the Dexter # 8-430-5UC3 that you referenced will be installed on dual wheels when tapered coned lug nuts like # 6-109 are used instead of flange wheel nuts. It essentially allows you to use a lower torque spec for the nuts which would be required when using coned nuts.
