Preparation Procedure for Flat Towing 2009 Jeep Wrangler with Manual Transmission

Question:

I am about to tow a 2009 jeep wrangler with a 6 speed manual transmission. Everywhere I read it says transfer case in neutral and transmission in gear. What gear? 1,2nd, 3rd 4th etc. It doesnt show anywhere and the opinions of the internet are all over the place. Can you clarify this for me? Thank you

Helpful Expert Reply:

When the transfer case of your 2009 Jeep Wrangler with manual transmission is placed into the Neutral the driveshaft will be disengaged from the powertrain. This will allow the vehicle to move with all wheels down despite the transmission position. The owner's manual does not specify which gear to use, as you noted, but most owner's put the Jeep's manual transmission into 2nd or 3rd gear based on what I read online.

You might contact a local Jeep dealer with your Wrangler's VIN which will let them look up the specific transmission in it and confirm the prep procedure to flat tow it. The general information available online may not always include considerations for a specific vehicle so a check with Jeep is not a bad idea.
