Prodigy P3 Brake Controller Installation in 2014 Ram 1500 with Factory Controller
Question:
I have a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 with the factory installed brake controller. When I am towing my 27 Ft. travel trailer occasionally an alert come on the dash that says inch check trailer brake wiring then a few seconds later says trailer brakes disconnected. I have tried braking when that alert is on and sure enough the trailer brakes werent working. Usually the alert goes away within a few seconds and the brakes are then back. Sometimes the brakes are gone for up to 15 to 30 seconds before they come back. This occurrence is sporadic and some times I can pull all day and the brakes work fine. I have had the truck checked at two dealer service departments and they both said there is no problem with the truck and the problem is in the trailer. I have had the trailer checked at two RV repair shops and they both said the wiring is good and the problem is in the truck. Also I have towed the trailer with two other vehicle before we got the Dodge, and did not have the problem. It started when I got the Dodge Ram. I suggested to one of the Dodge dealer service that maybe its the controller. The service writer wasnt interested. Is it possible to bypass the factory brake controller with an aftermarket one?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Yes, you can replace the factory brake controller in your 2014 Dodge Ram pickup with a superior aftermarket unit. Many owners who select the factory controller option ultimately end up with an aftermarket controller for one reason or another.
For a reliable brake controller I suggest the Prodigy P3 # 90195 which will install in your truck using wiring adapter # 3023-P. You can refer to the linked video and article for installation details. Please note that you may need to take your truck to a Ram dealer to adjust some settings since you won't be using the OEM controller anymore.
