Solution for Transporting 2 Bikes with Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Receiver

Question:

I am looking to find a carrying 2 bikes one of which is an ebike. I want to be able to buy it with a ramp as I cannot lift it or be able to attach one I have made. I am looking at your MT70108. I can then use it for cargo also. I know I would need ratchet straps. My ebike weights 48 lbs. To complicate things my hitch receiver is 1 1/4 so I know I would probably need an adapter and that cuts the capacity in half. I realize I would need to have a ramp made. Would this hold two bikes and could this work. Thanks.

The Curt Cargo Carrier # C18113 itself is physically up to the task of supporting a couple of bikes, even with one being a heavier e-bike model. The potential issues as you mentioned are going to be the reduced capacity on your trailer hitch from using an adapter like the Brophy # HTAD, making sure everything is tied down properly, and fabricating a ramp that will work with it for your particular application.

If you like the idea of using a cargo carrier for this purpose for its versatility, then I really recommend looking at the Curt 19x47 # C18110 instead. This features the same overall size of the carrier you were looking at except that it's directly compatible with your 1-1/4 inch receiver (so you can maintain your hitch's capacity) and it features a mesh platform that's going allow for easier mounting of your bikes. With this type of platform you can also add the Bike Rack Adapter # CC-125 which will give you 4 wheel hoops to support 2 bikes along with the needed tie-down straps. The hoops will work with tires that are up to 2-1/4 inches wide.

I have attached a couple video demonstrations that you can check out as well.

One other option you may want to consider is the Thule EasyFold XT Bike Rack # TH903202. This obviously takes you up to another price range level but this particular rack does feature all the amenities you're looking for (other than it not also serving as a cargo carrier). The rack is directly compatible with 1-1/4 inch hitch receivers, can handle e-bikes that are up to 65 pounds, and features an integrated aluminum ramp to help with loading/unloading. The entire carrier can also be folded up for compact storage and the handle with wheels allows for easy transport.

I have included a video demonstration on this rack that you can also take a look at.
