Weight Distribution System for 8000 lb Boat/Trailer w/ Surge Coupler Towed by 2004 Chevy Avalanche
Question:
I looking to buy a hitch for my 2004 Chevy Avalanche 1500 truck. I estimate total weight of the boat and trailer at approx 8000 lbs, tongue weight about 600 lbs. Which hitches will not interfer with the brakes and are the correct size? How much leeway do I have with the tongue weight?

As a starting point, I would recommend finding the exact as-towed weight and tongue weight of the boat and trailer. This is an important consideration in choosing a weight distribution system, as well as determining if you are exceeding the towing capacity of the Avalanche. According to my research, the towing capacity varied from 7100 up to 12000 lbs depending on how the truck was equipped. Exceeding the manufacturer stated towing capacity is not recommended.
For best performance, you will want the tongue weight figure of your boat and trailer to fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the W/D system. Make sure anything stowed in the bed of the Avalanche that is behind the rear axle is added to the tongue weight figure.
Given the 600 lb tongue weight of your boat and trailer that you provided, I would recommend the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System, part # RP66559. This system is compatible with trailers whose tongue weights range from 500-1000 lbs. This system is also compatible with the surge coupler on your trailer. The weight distributing shank is included, but you will need a trailer ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank. For a 2 inch ball, I would recommend part # A-90, or part # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.
If you find that the weight of the boat is really close to the weight capacity of your truck, I would highly recommend a transmission cooler if you do not already have one. The Derale Transmission Cooler, part # D13503 would provide an inexpensive insurance policy for your transmission. If your Avalanche has the 5.3L motor, you will need the # D13035 fittings, and # D13018 fittings for the 8.1L motor.
