The most economical option to add a 7-way and brake controller to your 2005 Volvo XC90 is going to take a number of parts, starting with a 4-way, the T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56045. A 4-way is needed because it will allow you to then install a 7-way adapter; the 4-way will be what allows your trailer's turn signals to function.
From there you will need to use the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L, which will give you the 7-way and other necessary components to add a brake controller.
Your 2005 Volvo XC90 is a bit different than most vehicles in that in order to hard wire a brake controller you would need to take it to your Volvo dealer in order for them to install it because it takes a professional to locate the wiring for the stoplight switch.
Thankfully you can avoid that cost by installing the aforementioned # ETBC7L and using the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180.
This brake controller is wireless and you simply use your smartphone in order to set up the system and monitor your trailer brakes. There is no in-cab unit as the Echo just plugs into the 7-way; this is the easiest brake controller on the market to use and will be the most cost-effective option considering a hard wire will require a visit to your Volvo dealer and the Echo is very easy to utilize on multiple vehicles. So even if you want to use it on a different car down the road you can;
I have added links to video reviews for you to take a look at as well.
