Setting Up Weight Distribution with Auto-Leveling Air Bags on a GMC Yukon
Question:
I read your note about auto load leveling and followed the instructions exactly. My wheel well to ground measurements stayed the same each time, and the Yukon is level. However, I heard the compressor kick on when proceeding with the load distribution hitch procedure. I am concerned the air bladders are holding the weight and not the front end of the frame. Once I initiate the air compressor with a “small amount of weight,” as you instructed, should I then shut the Yukon off to prevent the air compressor from leveling the load? I need the weight to be primarily on the front end of the frame, right? Otherwise, what is the use of the weight distribution hitch? Thanks.

If your compressor kicked in after your auto load leveling air bag system and weight distribution were set up together then the only solution I can think of is that you have front air bags as well and they are sensing the extra weight that the weight distribution (WD) system is putting on the front suspension. It shouldn't be trying to fill the rear bags because a WD system should be taking some weight off.
With that being said, if you have the ability to turn off the auto-leveling function then that would be best to do before loading anything up. By turning off the auto leveling function (and keeping it off) you allow the WD system to work completely on its own so that it is evenly distribute weight across the axles and your air bag kit isn't constantly trying to readjust.
If the only way that you can control whether the auto-leveling system is on or off is by completely shutting your Yukon off then I recommend setting up your towing rig fully loaded and allowing your air bags to fill up before installing a WD system like the Strait-Line # RP66074. Once the air bags are filled then you can set up your WD system and it should take weight off of the air bag kit. If you do this without first putting extra weight in the bed (like the article you referenced suggested) then your air compressor shouldn't kick in after you get everything set up.
