Without a trailer connected the Tekonsha Voyager part # 39510 would not have a light displayed. Once a trailer is connected a green light SHOULD come on. If you aren't seeing any light on the controller when connected to a trailer this would indicate that you most likely have corrosion either on the trailer wiring. Inspect the pins on both side of the trailer wiring connectors for corrosion and clean as needed. Corrosion is almost always the problem for the situation you described.
